Painting I - Fall 2011
Taught by Professor of Art, Boris Zakic, this course was an introduction to the basics of painting. Our medium was oil-based paints, and our methods ranged from wet-on-wet to impasto.
Introduction
This introduction taught us the difference between shading and value. This was my first oil painting ever, but we were deliberately told to paint on scrap cardboard with the intent that paintings are not permanent and can always be revisited. Regardless, I enjoyed my painting of an apple.
Still-Life Study
This project involved painting a bust and the entire background. Beforehand we had to cut a square-hole and paint what we saw through it. The first image shows my setup and the cut-out on the right side of my easel, and the second image shows what I saw through it.

Transfer Painting
For this project, we drew an image on tracing paper with charcoal so that we could transfer the drawing onto a canvas without causing a mess. Afterwards, I painted a skeleton of a T-Rex, the king of the dinosaurs, from an internet image.
Impasto
This project was something else. We had to paint in impasto, but oil paint is expensive so we had to find another pasty medium as a substitute. So we used toothpaste, which we used acrylic paint to mix with the toothpaste to simulate oil paint to create an impasto painting. This is a painting of a Bird of Paradise Flower, which is native to Hawaii. On a side note, toothpaste doesn't dry well.
Final Project
Our final project was to create our own stretcher frames and manually wrapping canvas around it. We also had free reign over the subject matter, so I created a rooster for my mother.
